When the Road Rearranges You

#41

I saved a post on Instagram recently because it captured something I’ve felt for years but never quite said so clearly.

It suggested that people sometimes change more through travel than through therapy.

Not because therapy doesn’t matter — it absolutely does — but because travel removes you from the structure of who you think you are. It strips away routine, roles, expectations. What some therapists call “identity pressure.”

When you’re far from home, you can hear yourself differently.

I know that’s been true for me.

The Practice of Connection

#40

Connection can happen in so many ways.

Through long lunches with friends who hold space without fixing.
Through a smile exchanged in the Costco checkout line.
Through meeting a stranger on a bus in Vietnam who shares a similar story — and deciding to grab a coffee when the ride ends. (Tim’s connection moment this week.)

These moments remind us that we are not alone.

The Question Everyone Asks

#39

One of the questions we’re asked again and again — especially after our first six-month adventure — is: What was your favorite place?

For Tim, the answer is easy. Costa Rica. The beaches, the water, the expansiveness. It was also the place where he had one of the most profound, personal experiences of the entire journey — a single day at the beach that opened something deep and lasting for him.

For me, it’s never been one place.

The Price of a Life Fully Lived

#38

The stats of the trip are in!

After tracking the majority of our expenses (I might have missed a meal or two, but overall I kept very solid records as we went), our 98 days on the road averaged $127 per person, per day.

That number includes everything: transportation (planes, cars, ferries, airport transfers), any tours we took, the week-long cruise, all food (including copious amounts of both still and fizzy water), and of course our hotels, apartments, and agriturismos.

Sunsets, Boxes, and the Beginning of Home

More flights, more travel — and the move is official.

I’m officially in Texas, just outside of Dallas, and it’s been a very full, very eventful week. So many emotions packed into a short amount of time. I realized I haven’t done a big out-of-state move in over 25 years — not since I landed in Portland all those years ago. Somehow, I didn’t quite grasp how big this transition would feel.

Antalya, Before the Next Chapter

#36

This week in Antalya on the southern coast of Turkey has been restorative, healing, and calming. On our first walk along the ocean’s promenade, I could feel my body relaxing and decompressing. There’s a lovely energy here. The weather has been warm for winter’s sake — especially compared to the PNW. We scheduled a couple of massages. The food has been average, but it’s been wonderful not having to think about the next meal or what to eat. And there’s been time to truly rest a bit, while also planning ahead for the next big life changes.

Happy New Year!

I sent out a short holiday email last week with a special reel, but for some reason it ended up in spam for many of you. My apologies. If you’d like to see the reel and my shortened message, please check your spam folder, or head over to my YouTube channel to watch the reel there.

Last week held contrast — a challenging stretch paired with one truly incredible day. And honestly, this is life.

A Holiday Video Wrap for You

#34

Just a quick hello to share this final holiday video with you.
This past week has been beautifully full — all good things, just a little busy.

Christmas Eve in Sardinia unfolded in the loveliest way: a seafood lunch at a cozy trattoria with a shared bottle of champagne, a quiet stroll through the cathedral at dusk where we witnessed the beginning of a traditional Mass, and our familiar tradition of watching Love Actually.

Wet Socks, Cruise Ports, and a Little Tired

#33

The pace of this week has been intense. Ports of call every day. Two travel days just to reach our next destination. The unpacking, the grocery run, stocking up for an eight-night stay — and then realizing, after only three nights, that we’ll be moving again. This first stop in Sardinia turned out to be a little too remote and quiet for where our energy is right now and what we’re wanting to experience.
